Why You Need a Hybrid Backup (and something I forgot...)

Some people have asked me, "Why should I do BOTH local and online backups?" Here's why... Online backup allows you to access your most important files from anywhere, and offers redundancy (backup for your backup). Local backup is a complementary solution, and solves the biggest problem with cloud backup – slow backups and restores. With local backup, you can backup EVERYTHING, and restore your data really fast! That's the hybrid approach.

Did you miss last Thursday's message? If so, read The ONE Thing You Need for Backups (and faster WiFi) for my introductory remarks about the IDrive ONE...

IDrive ONE: Hybrid Backup Made Simple (PLUS...)

IDrive ONE external hard drive

I love my IDrive and use it every day to make backups. In addition to the convenience of automated wireless backups, and the hybrid local/cloud backup capability, the all-new IDrive ONE also functions as a WiFi Range Extender. Here's a summary of all that it can do for you:

  1. It's an External Hard Drive for backups, with optional wifi connectivity. (Choose either 1-TB HDD or 128-GB SSD)
  2. It's a Super-Fast Wifi Range Extender to boost your wifi signal and extend it to places where it couldn't reach before.
  3. It's a Media Hub that will store and stream your photos, videos and music to your mobile devices.

Have you been putting off backups because you don't have an external hard drive? Order your IDrive ONE today, during this exclusive sale. You'll get it for just $59.50, instead of the regular price of $99.90.

Similar external hard drives with Wi-Fi connectivity cost about $159. A comparable wifi range extender would sell for at least $79. And the IDrive ONE comes with one free year of IDrive cloud backup, too. So this really is an fantastic deal.

Safety, Security and Invisibility

So what about the safety and security of cloud backups? IDrive uses strong encryption when storing your data in the cloud, but still, some people worry. That's another reason why a local backup with an external hard drive is an excellent choice. The backup drive is in your home or office, and under your protection.

That brings me to the point that I forgot to mention before. It's something so obvious, I didn't think to mention it at first. One of my concerns when backing up locally is that a thief could easily steal my external backup drive, tethered, as it is, to my computer by a telltale USB cable. It might be even more tempting (and certainly easier to steal) than the computer itself!

But because the IDrive ONE drive can connect wirelessly, it would make the burglar's work more difficult. You can place your IDrive ONE in a closet, a cupboard, or any out-of-the-way spot with access to an electrical outlet and Wi-Fi coverage. And presto, it becomes "invisible" to intruders, while still remaining connected to your PC, Mac and mobile devices for automatic backups.

IDrive ONE external hard drive

As I mentioned last week, I don't know of ANY other backup solution that combines local and cloud storage like this. Nor is there one that seamlessly integrates mobile and social media backup, while allowing you to backup UNLIMITED devices. (Carbonite and Mozy charge extra if you have more than one computer.) And it has a wifi range extender built in! This is a truly amazing product.

IDrive Questions and Answers

Just in case there's any confusion about IDrive Cloud, or the IDrive ONE, here are some of the most common questions I've gotten:

Q: What exactly is the IDrive ONE?
A: In a nutshell, it's an external hard drive, commonly used for backups. But it has the unique feature of Wi-Fi connectivity, so you can backup multiple computers (up to 5 at once) without connecting it manually to each one. In addition, it functions as a Wi-Fi range extender.

Q: What is the difference between the 1-TB HDD and 128-GB SSD models?
A: The answer boils down to space versus speed. The 1-TB HDD model is a standard external hard drive, with one terabyte (1000 gigabytes) of storage space. The 128-gigabyte model is a solid-state external drive. Solid-state drives are MUCH faster, but are more expensive to manufacture. Although it has less capacity, I recommend the 128-GB SSD drive, unless you have a huge amount of data to back up.

Q: Does the IDrive ONE work on Windows XP, Vista, Windows 7, 8 and 10? How about my Mac?
A: Yes, the IDrive ONE will work on both Windows and Mac computers. There are also mobile apps for iPhone and Android devices.

Q: Can I use the IDrive ONE with any backup software?
A: Yes. The drive comes with IDrive backup software, but if you prefer, you can use it with Windows Backup, Macrium Reflect, Acronis TrueImage, or any other backup software.

With IDrive and the IDrive ONE, all the bases are covered. Your PCs, Macs, mobile gadgets and social media accounts are securely backed up, painlessly and automatically.

Bob
